FEMA doubles flood aid for Southern Utah

Southern Utah will receive nearly double the amount of federal aid than was expected for repairing damage caused by December's floods. The assessment process with the Federal Emergency Management Agency is wrapping up, and State Homeland Security Liaison Scott Alvord said just less than $11 million worth of projects has been deemed eligible for FEMA funds. Initial damage assessments by FEMA in January put that number closer to $6 million.Washington County Administrator Dean Cox said the revised estimate is good news, considering the agency was given the go-ahead to fund 75 percent of eligible flood repair costs when President Barack Obama declared Southern Utah a disaster area in February.
