Improving tax revenues for St. George and Washington City

St. George City officials project tax revenues will increase approximately 3.5 percent for the new fiscal year, bringing the city's general fund to just under $44 million. It's the first budget to show a revenue increase in three years. And that means some capital gains projects will finally be taken off the back burner. Six new projects totaling more than $10 million were recommended in the 2012 budget. They included $3 million toward a match on improvements on Red Hills Parkway, $1 million in road widening for Dixie Drive and $2 million in Washington Fields drainage improvements. The Spectrum

According to the budget message given to Washington City Council members on Wednesday, the city had a 3.5 percent growth rate and collected 9 percent more in sales tax in 2011 than 2010. The total budget for 2012 has been set at $44,139,738. Carter said the total budget for 2010-11 was estimated at $39,501,427. Because of a more stable economic outlook, the 2012 budget also reflects the addition of new positions within the city, ending a "no-hire" policy. The Spectrum
