State commits $7M to Kane community’s water system

A state board promised $7 million in government-backed low-interest loans Thursday to help build a new water system in a northwestern Kane County community. About 250 people occupy summer homes in the Zion View subdivision at Strawberry Point, which received a violation notice this summer from the Utah Division of Drinking Water and is under orders to correct the problems immediately.

The water conservancy district is also asking the Drinking Water Board for state and federal funding to help with the project. The district is hoping the board will refinance nearly $7.4 million in existing loans for the community’s patchwork water system already in use, plus about $1.6 million in grants and $1.6 million in loans at 1 percent interest.
