Washington County OKs $4M justice building

Construction workers will have a bit more work to do later this year when they break ground on the new $4 million Washington County Justice Center. The Washington County Commission voted unanimously to alter the design and make the building - the planned headquarters for county attorneys - more than 23 percent larger. Citing the state's desire to also use space in the building, the commission's decision means the square footage of the building will go up from 18,000 square feet to 22,225 square feet. It will take up more than 4,000 extra square feet horizontally.

The county's design contract with local firm MRW Design Association will now be $125,000, compared with $108,500 before the change. And though a contractor has yet to be selected for construction, costs could be expected to go up nearly 20 percent. On a $4 million building that could be more than $800,000 added to the construction price tag. The Spectrum
