All jobless rates in Southwestern Utah measure above the state average

Seasonally adjusted unemployment rates recently released by the Utah Department of Workforce Services indicate that all the county unemployment rates in southwestern Utah measure above the state average. However, only Washington and Garfield counties maintained jobless shares above the national rate.

Garfield County typically shows higher-than-average jobless rates because of the seasonal nature of many of its tourism-related jobs. That means many folks experience a bout of unemployment during any given year. Washington County participated to a greater degree than most areas in the recent housing bubble which has resulted in its higher-than-average rate.
