St. George struggles with increasing costs of golf courses, decreasing tourism
Once stronger magnets for tourism, St. George's municipal golf courses have struggled in recent years with significant drops in revenue. The troubled economy, coupled with abnormally cold and rainy weather and increased competition from other courses and sports, has meant St. George's four city-owned golf courses have limped on with significantly fewer customers who are spending less at the courses. From 2001 to 2011, the total rounds of golf played on the city's four courses--Red Hills, Southgate, St. George and Sunbrook--have dropped by more than 98,00 rounds. total revenues have been $3.2 million so far this year.
