Iron County Commissioners approve belt route to Iron Springs

The Iron County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Monday during the Iron County Commission meeting to connect 5700 West to Iron Springs Road with a straight road down the 5700 West alignment as part of the belt route. The section of road will be built between state Route 56 and Iron Springs Road by acquiring right of way to build the road straight north from the 5700 West intersection.

The belt route is designed to offer industrial traffic and commuters an alternative route to the Iron Springs area of the county rather than using Interstate 15 to Cedar City. According to the 2005 Environmental Impact Study on the project, a belt route would reduce the number of accidents. The EIS estimates savings in the county of around $35 million over 20 years when the cost of construction is compared to the amount the county would spend on accidents. The Spectrum
