Washington County School District explores renovations and new buildings

If Washington County residents vote to approve the Washington County School District’s proposed $185 million bond in the upcoming general election, new schools will likely be built and major construction overhauls to some of the existing schools would take place.

The new bond would pay for a variety of improvements and renovations to existing schools, including East Elementary, the district’s oldest elementary school, which could possibly be entirely rebuilt with the bond money. In addition to paying to build a new cone site in the Little Valley and Washington Fields area of St. George, the funds will pay for additions and remodels at Pine View Middle School and a new vocational building at Pine View HigNote: While most residents realize Washington County maintains a higher share of seniors than average, the county also has a high share of population in the under-18 age group. Roughly 30 percent of the county’s population is under the age of 18—a slightly lower share than the 31 percent in Utah, the youngest state in the nation. The United States shows only 24 percent of its population below the age of 18. As population growth continues, so will the number of children needing public education.h School.

The district is also asking voters to fund a new high school, intermediate and middle school in the foothills separating Washington Fields and Hurricane, as well as three new elementary schools that would help “feed” those schools’ populations. The Spectrum
