New St. George parks sprout up

The $400,000 second phase of construction at the Royal Oaks Park, located at 1250 N. 1400 West, includes a new restroom, parking area, picnic pavilion, furniture, trails and general landscaping. Located on 5.5 acres along the wash, it is popular with nearby residents, and the new additions should help accommodate the crowds that can develop during weekends.

In recent months, crews have also been working on new additions at Pioneer Park and Silkwood Park, and construction is either planned or underway on several new projects. Some of the major ones include the pioneer-themed Hela Seegmiller Historic Farm in the Little Valley area, an All Abilities Park at the Tonaquint Park complex and the Red Hills Desert Garden that sits above the city along Red Hills Parkway.

Since 2010, the Parks Division has seen its budget grow from $3.2 million to $5.2 million, with capital outlays increasing from just $44,000 in the 2010 budget to $646,700 in 2014. The Spectrum
