Santa Clara OKs plan for new Harmons store

The Santa Clara City Council unanimously approved the site plan for a new Harmons Grocery store. Plans for a town center including the store were first announced in February 2008 with an expected opening date of 2009, but the nation’s disastrous economic downturn left the project on the shelf until Harmons representatives met with Santa Clara’s Planning Commission last month and gained their recommendation to proceed.

Construction will begin July 1 with the store opening scheduled for Feb. 15. A groundbreaking will take place in late June. The approximately 69,000-square-foot store will be comparable to the St. George store at the corner of 700 South and River Road, but Santa Clara’s store will have an upper-level outdoor mezzanine accessible to the public where events can be held or people can simply enjoy the view.
