Plans are under way for a $500 million solar power plant to be built in Parowan. Construction may begin before the year is up, but officials have to figure out how to get approval to move an endangered species from the proposed area first. The 660-acre project will be completed in two phases with the first half being 300 acres. The completed plant would produce 100 megawatts of power. At this time there is no word of who would purchase the power.
The company plans to start construction later this year, if all the permits are approved. For the company to receive economic development dollars, it would need to complete 5 percent of the project by the end of the year. Build out on the plant is estimated to take six years and bring in anywhere from 30 to 60 temporary construction jobs to the area. Long-term jobs are estimated to be about 18.The county has issued a land use permit to build on the private land east of 2200 North in Parowan.
